Samuel Spaltner has been Managing Director of B+B Parkhaus GmbH & Co. KG since June 2019. Previously, he was Head of D-A-CH Operations in the Parking Solutions division of Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH for many years. We asked him about his company’s digital goals.
What change have you noticed after the lockdown months in terms of end-user movements? How did the figures compare?
After the lockdown months, the parking business is back to normal, as it was before COVID-19. There are currently no more significant changes in parking behavior.
What would you like to see in 2022 and what kind of expectations do you have after two years that were as difficult to forecast and calculate economically as 2020 and 2021?
In 2022, we would like to see a stable parking business, through free retail, unaffected hospitality, and increases in sales from electric car charging in parking garages to finance our infrastructure facilities.
Our latest joint project is Mannheim’s Q6/Q7 Quartier, where you will soon be able to park contactless. What criteria do you look at when you want to digitize one of your parking garages or acquire new parking garages in general? Parking frequency, location, value for the city?
Yes, the criteria mentioned are important. In addition, our previous presence at a location or in a region plays an important role in the decision for new locations. A digitization investment depends on any contract terms, favorable opportunities, marketing opportunities, and/or the age of the existing technology. Digitization develops opportunistically for us.
What characterizes your company? What makes you stand out?
B+B Parkhaus GmbH & Co. KG is a family-owned company and an experienced and competent partner for all aspects of planning, financing, construction and management of parking garages, now in its third generation. What additionally distinguishes us is a high ownership rate, our strong technical team and our great innovative spirit.
Since when have you been working with evopark and why did B+B choose evopark?
I got to know evopark when it was still in its early stages. In 2015, the evopark founders got me excited about the idea of increasing the convenience of parking facilities with the help of digital access. Since then, the company has become a real pioneer for digital parking solutions.
What do you appreciate about our solutions? What are the key benefits for you as an operator and your customers?
It is particularly interesting for us that evopark consolidates numerous mobility service providers under one roof. In addition, the company offers an attractive interface to parking systems from Scheidt & Bachmann.
Which digital parking solutions do you personally use and which features/services would you like to see in the future?
Personally, I use the Kassenautomat App, mercedes.me, APCOA Flow, the P-Card, PayByPhone, EasyPark and Park Now – I like to see for myself what advantages individual service providers offer. What I think could be further developed, however, is the integration and interaction with the digital services in the vehicle.
With B+B, you are considered a trendsetter in the industry in terms of “connected mobility”. What are you tackling next?
For us, the expansion of the e-charging infrastructure for e-vehicles, digital customer management (we have some catching up to do here), the use of the point of interest, and the establishment for interconnected digital service offerings are at the top of the agenda.
In your opinion, what is needed to ensure that off-street parking remains a relevant mobility component worldwide in the future?
It is important to maintain people’s interest in individual transportation by car and to generally offer sufficient opportunities to use this form of mobility comfortably in urban areas. As a parking garage operator, we can have a significant impact here by offering new and attractive digital services.
Thank you very much for doing this interview, Samuel. We look forward to many more years of partnership and to setting new trends in digital parking together with you.
